Introduction
Twice a year in January and July I review total income from my portfolio and publish portfolio income updates.
My goal is to achieve and maintain a portfolio of at least $2,870,000 which is capable of providing a passive income of around $99,000 through 2024 (Portfolio Objective).
This page summarises current progress to this objective and draws on my most recent income update.
Level of portfolio distributions
The chart below sets out the distributions or income received on a half-yearly basis from the portfolio over the past six years.
A longer view of annual portfolio distributions in nominal dollars, together with the average portfolio level is provided below.
Sources of portfolio distributions
These distributions come from a variety of different Vanguard retail index funds, as well as exchange traded funds in the portfolio detailed in Monthly Portfolio Updates.
The chart below sets out the individual sources of portfolio distributions over the last year.
The source of distributions for any given year can vary.
The chart and below tracks the overall level of portfolio distributions from individual parts of the portfolio over time.
The following chart looks at levels of distributions across the full financial independence journey.
Portfolio distributions and total expenses
The following graph provides an updated record of the level of monthly portfolio distributions (red) compared to total spending (blue) since 2017.
This graph shows the level of portfolio distributions as a proportion of total expenses (credit card expenses and other fixed annual expenses).
Future projections of portfolio distributions
This chart sets out projected future income for the portfolio, largely based on past average distributions.
These payment occur on a quarterly pattern, and the chart below sets out the recent pattern of these quarter distributions, and an estimate of potential distributions through 2024.

In addition, a further post on past trends in passive income and expenses is here, and this post further discusses potential future income from the portfolio.
Finally, an alternative view of investment income is provided by looking at the history of taxable investment income across the journey. An analysis and time series of that income is provided here.
